The village

Not on the way to anywhere. That's the point.

McGregor is not on the way to anywhere. You have to mean to come here. That's part of what makes it what it is — a village at the foot of the Riviersonderend mountains where the light is different and the pace is different and people come back, specifically, because it stays the same.

The Krans Nature Reserve begins at the edge of the village — and that's exactly where my villas are. The Breede River Valley stretches out below. In summer it's hot and still and golden. In winter it's cold enough for fires and quiet enough to hear yourself think.

Village Life

White-washed houses, a single main road and the particular rhythm of a village that hasn't tried to be anything other than itself. The Saturday morning market is worth setting your alarm for — local honey, farm produce, handmade things. Then coffee. Then nothing in particular.

Eating Out

Food that tastes like someone made it for you — because they did. Good coffee, lovely eateries, and a handful of beloved spots that regulars defend loyally. Don't miss the Monster Munch truck at Jimmy's Pub on Tuesdays — it has the kind of following that says everything.

Wine Tasting

The McGregor wine route is small, personal and entirely without pretension. Bemind on the main road pours from the garage, literally. McGregor Winery anchors the village. Lords is high up in the mountains and worth the drive. And if you make it to Tanagra — try the eau de vie. You'll understand.

Strolls, Walks & Hikes

The village is made for walking. White-washed lanes, bougainvillea, nothing pressing. When you're ready for more, the Krans Nature Reserve starts right at the edge of the village. For serious hikers, the Boesmanskloof Trail and Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve are among the finest in the Western Cape.

Mountain Biking

The trails around McGregor are quietly building a reputation. Fynbos singletrack, mountain views, routes for every level — from a gentle valley cruise to something that will genuinely test you. Ask us and we'll point you in the right direction.

Exploring the Surroundings

The Donkey Sanctuary is a McGregor institution — worth a visit, especially with children. Within thirty minutes in any direction you'll find the Robertson Wine Valley, Bonnievale's wine and cheese route, and well known estates like Springfield, DeWetshof and Weltevrede that make the drive feel deliberate.

Two hours from Cape Town.

Take the N1 to Worcester and turn off to the R60 to Robertson, then follow the signs to McGregor. If you take the N2, turn off at Stormsvlei and follow the tar road to Bonnievale, then to Robertson and follow the signs to McGregor.
